GROUP SOUND COLLAGE PROJECT
DIRECTIONS: Our assignment was to create a sound collage with a small group of only three members. "A sound collage is a technique where recorded and pre-recorded sounds and/or songs are assembled together to create a new composition." We used recording devices and complied the various sounds using the program Audacity.
"Since the beginning of time, people have traveled from one place to another. Over mountains, through valleys, across oceans, exiting the atmosphere... there’s something in the genetic code of humans to explore their surroundings. Working in small groups, use your portable digital recorders and make a series of good quality recordings (44.1 kHz) that describe a travelers journey. Obviously, your travels will be far less ambitious then traveling over mountains or across oceans. Instead, pick a small journey such as traveling over a hill, across a bridge, or through a grove of trees. Listen. Pay attention to the sound around you. How many layers of sound can you hear, both little and big. Once you have collected all the sounds bring them back to the lab and edit them into a collective file that describes this journey. Once finished we will play the finished Travelers Journey made by each group and try to identify the location of the sounds." |
GROUP STATEMENT: Our group focused on the transition from urban city life to quiet rural life, yet in both technology is still present. Our recording begins with the traveler crossing a busy street with conversations, bus sounds, and automotive street signs. It then evolves to a leave covered dirt path and wind in the trees, yet a distant siren and train passing can still be heard. The last location is along side and then in a river. As the traveler emerges herself in the water it begins to rain, completing the transition from man-made to nature.
