HYBRID PROJECT
DIRECTIONS: “A hybrid is the combination of two or more different things, aimed at achieving a particular goal.” The basic objective of the Hybrid project was to make the invisible visible. We visited the microscopy lab on campus and gathered blown up images of materials and needed to use those images to create a commentary on an issue or topic. We were told to use the Adobe Photoshop program to alter the images to better convey the piece’s meaning.
The end product needed to be at least 16x20”, a high-resolution image (at least 2000x2000 pixels), printed out professionally in the print lab, and then posted on our website. A 300-500 word statement also needed to accompany the work. |
PERSONAL STATEMENT: Body image affects the American society tremendously. Body comparisons are constantly highlighted in our everyday media: in magazines, on T.V., and even in children's picture books and movies. Perceptions and understandings of the "should be" are framing our own acceptance of ourselves. This constant societal judgment often leads to unhealthy life choices in hopes to gain the "right" image. According to U.S. News Health, nearly 10 million Americans suffer from life threatening eating disorders today and many more have been affected during sometime of their lives.
This piece works to show the affects social constructions of the "right" harmfully influence everyone, especially women. The paper chain features females of all body types constrained by the pressure to be the "right" or "best" shape. The women are made up of images from the microscopy lab of food particles found in vomit to emulate the lengths some are forced to go to in order to reach this "necessary goal". I choice to stream my chain around public female bathroom stalls in an effort to bring attention to the harmful realities of social body image constructions and its end result. Eating disorders aren't just for super skinny teenagers, all body types, from all walks of life are influenced by the Disney princess pressures and it can all result in unhealthy lifestyles, like eating disorders. |
