STATEMENT: While reading Jon Krakauer's, Into the Wild, in High School I was was moved by the following quote about the juxtaposition of our need for change and our natural instinct of complacency and conformity.
"So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more dangerous to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun." -Jon Krakauer, Into the Wild My goal of this piece is to bring awareness to the ways in which we visually represent ourselves, whether that be through clothes, hair style, and even posture and how by changing that visual one's character can change also. The importance of this output to continually evolve in order to constaintly grow as a person and as other's perceive us. Our externals influence how other's see us, treat us, and accept us. This in turn, influence how we see ourselves. Realizing, understanding, and controlling the cycle of perception can only lead to better understanding of ourselves. This video and audio compilation works to identify the visual representation of a person's control over their external within the sound collage of the repeating beat of Wolfmother's song Vagabond and the reading of Krakauer's quote. Do you change? |
